Upstate New York, at the confluence of the great Hudson River and its mighty tributary the Mohawk from this stunning landscape came the creation of a new world of science. In 1887, Thomas Edison moved his Edison Machine Works here and in 1892, it became the headquarters of a major manufacturing company, giving the town its nickname Electric City.
The peak of Autumn, 1919 The pull of scientific discovery brings Charles Proteus Steimetz, a brilliant mathematician and recent arrival from Ellis Island, to town. His ability to capture lightning in a bottle earns him the title "Wizard of Electric City." Barely four feet tall with a deeply curving spine, Steinmetz's physical deformity belies his great intellect. Allied with his Mohawk friend Joseph Longboat and his adopted eleven-year-old granddaughter Midget, the advancements he makes in Electric City will, quite simply, change the world.
The peak of Autumn, 1965 Sophie Levine, the daughter of a company man, one of the many scientists working at The Company, whose electric logo can be seen from everywhere in town. Her family escaped Europe just before World War II, leaving behind a wake of annihilation and persecution. Ensconced in Electric City, Sophie is coming of age just as the town is gasping its last breaths. The town, and America as a whole, is on the cusp of great instability blackouts, social unrest over Vietnam, and soon the advent of the seventies. Into her orbit drifts Henry Van Curler, the favored son of one of Electric City's founding Dutch families, as well as Martin Longboat, grandson of Joseph Longboat. This new generation of Electric City will face both the history of their town and their own uncertain future, struggling to bridge the gap between the old world and the new.
Electric City is a vital, pulsing, epic novel of America, of its great scientific ingenuity and its emotional ambition; one that frames the birth and evolution of its towns against the struggles of its indigenous tribes, the immigrant experience, a country divided, and the technological advancements that ushered in the modern world.
Electric City (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Rosner Audible Studios Books
This novel is a work of fiction which incorporates a number of real people and actual events, including Charles Proteus Steinmetz and some of his work at General Electric. Although much of the story occurs long after Steinmetz's death, he and a Native American friend (fictional as far as I know) and their families are central characters. The author's portrayal of Steinmetz is excellent and all the characters are interesting and engaging. In another sense, this is the story of Schenectady, from briefly told beginnings in ancient and colonial times to the rise and fall of General Electric, and of the people caught up in those events.

Electric City (Audible Audio Edition) Elizabeth Rosner Audible Studios Books Reviews
An extraordinary layered, rich, complex and at the same time deeply moving novel by Elizabeth Rosner, (the author of two othr great novels The Speed of Light and Blue Nude)
Great story tying modern, interesting characters, and historical people. I didn't want it to end. Very well written.
Cheers Elizabeth Rosner on a great book! I could not wait to see what waited on the next page! Your novel,
'Electric City', not only brought me back in time, but gave me an additional view of our city in retrospect, and also enlightened me on the historical past. Having grown up there, it allowed me to feel like I knew the characters and the setting. Thank you for a nice "time out" to read & enjoy "Electric City'!
I listened to this book on Audible and found the reading by the author, Elizabeth Rosner, to be wonderful. Her voice is clear and the tonal quality made it seem that she was telling the story to me, as a loved one would share an important tale. There was a sense that the story was unfolding during the reading. In addition to the reading being so pleasant, the story was a compelling blend of history and coming of age. The blending of information about the different cultures and tribes of this unique place and time kept me intrigued through out the telling. A beautiful book to listen to, read in a voice that truly brought the story to life.
What a stunning and incredibly moving novel this is, rich and layered with a sense of history and intertwining lives. I read it in just a couple of days, and found it hard to put it down, even as I wished to go slowly, in order to savor the language and images --- and now this story of Sophie, Martin and Henry lingers with me so powerfully. The writing is immensely beautiful, as I knew it would be (I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Rosner's fiction!) -- it's lyrical, sharp, clean, and resonant, with a beautifully subtle (and ambitious) sharing of the narrative by a whole band of characters. What's also impressive is the large vision in this story, the way it brings in the original people of this area of Schenectady, weaving their stories together with those of old Europe.
What catches my heart is all this, and more. At its deepest level, this novel is an unusually textured, deeply moving love story -- an unusual and heart-rending love triangle. There is something so real, so powerfully emotional, in these three young characters and their relationships. When I came to the last page, I had to sit for a long while, to absorb the beauty, sorrow, and joy -- sorrow tempered by joy, joy by sorrow. So, so satisfying! A novel to cherish, and to read time and again.
Ms. Rosner writes with elegant power, offering a fascinating inside view of oft overlooked aspects of the American experience. A love story at its core, it also provides insight into the story and contributions of Charles Proteus Steinmetz. I was riveted throughout, and deeply moved by this author's spare but gorgeous use of language. I enthusiastically recommend.
I lived in Schenectady New York and started my career with the company with the monogram in 1971. By 2006 I retired from that same company from the GE Lynn River Works in Massachusetts. I hesitated to buy this book. Not sure what the pages would deliver. What I received was a book filled with pages of memories. The street names, the names of some of the early settlers and of course mention of Mr. Edison and equally well known to Schenectady folk the name of Charles P Steinmetz. I found the descriptions to be accurate as of the last time went through the Electric City. The flashing sign long inactive as energy conservation became the fashion. Rather than boring statistics of the company’s progress there was instead a great story of the lives of immigrant families and friendships formed and lost. Of worthy note are the references to the Native Americans of the area and their impact and influence in their relations with the early settlers. I lived on a hill overlooking the Mohawk River/Erie Canal between lock 8 and lock 9 and can attest to the writer’s descriptions of the river, the winters and the city in general. KAPL still stands as best I know as well as Ellis Hospital. So not to show bias I will mention that I have travelled to many parts of the country and the world and their familiarity in any book I read stands only as something I can relate to and appreciate. It does not detract from a great story nor does it lend gloss to a mediocre story. It serves to allow me a greater appreciation for well-crafted tale and recognize an author who has done the time and research necessary to make a good story a great story. This is a five star book I would recommend to any acquaintance without hesitation. The bits of history are a bonus.
